Here are common questions about using ZereZ. If you can't find an answer, email us directly.
Subscriptions and purchases
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
- Open the iPhone Settings app and tap your name.
- Go to Subscriptions and choose ZereZ.
- Manage or cancel the subscription.
If you are subscribed, you can also tap Manage subscription in the ZereZ Pro section of the app's Account tab.
If you don't want to renew, cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends.
Warning
Deleting your account does not automatically cancel your subscription.
How do I restore a purchase?
- Check that this iPhone is signed in to the App Store with the Apple account used for the purchase.
- Go to the app's Account tab and tap Restore purchases on the Free plan card.
Note
Your App Store Apple account and the Apple or Google account you use to sign in to ZereZ are separate identities. Restoring also checks which ZereZ account the subscription is linked to.
Subscription linked to another account
"This subscription is linked to another ZereZ account" means the subscription is already linked elsewhere. Each subscription can be linked to only one ZereZ account.
If you can still use the original account, sign out, sign in with the same Apple or Google account you originally used for ZereZ, and tap Restore purchases again.
If the original account has been deleted, the subscription will not transfer to a new account. You can cancel it in the App Store or follow this page's refund instructions to request a refund from Apple.
For other issues, contact support.
How do I request a refund?
If you purchased ZereZ Pro through the App Store, follow Apple's instructions to request a refund. Apple determines refund eligibility. Canceling a subscription does not issue a refund; cancel separately if you don't want it to renew.
Expenses and settling up
Can I split expenses with a friend who doesn't have the app?
Yes. Add the friend from your contacts or by hand, then a group Owner or Admin adds them to the group. Expenses can be split with them as usual, and they don't need to install the app first.
When they want to see the ledger themselves, the person who added that friend can send a personal invitation link from the group's member list so they can claim that member in ZereZ. For how long links last and what to do when one stops working, see What if an invitation or join link no longer works?
Can I pay or transfer money in the app?
No. ZereZ only records ledgers and settle-up results. It does not process or move real money.
Pay however you usually do, then record the repayment under the group's Payments. ZereZ does not confirm that money actually changed hands.
What are my options if I don't want to split evenly?
New expenses are split evenly among all members by default. Under Split method, you can switch to:
- By ratio: split by each person's percentage. Percentages you adjust are locked; the other checked members split the remaining percentage equally.
- By adjustment: add or subtract an amount for individual members. The remaining amount is split evenly among checked members.
- By exact amount: set each person's amount directly. Amounts you enter are locked; the other checked members split the remaining amount equally.
- By shares: split by the shares each person holds. For example, with 2, 1, and 1 shares, they pay one half, one quarter, and one quarter. 0 shares means not included.
Can I record expenses in another currency? How is the exchange rate set?
Yes. ZereZ currently supports New Taiwan dollars (TWD), US dollars (USD), Japanese yen (JPY), and euros (EUR).
When the expense currency differs from the Group Settlement Currency, ZereZ fills in the exchange rate and converted amount using the reference rate available for the transaction date, and you can save right away. If there is no rate for that day (on a weekend or holiday, for example), the latest available rate is used and the screen shows its date. A reference rate may differ from what your bank or card actually charges; you can change the rate or enter the actual settlement amount directly. If no reference rate is available, enter one by hand.
After you save, the amount is not recalculated when exchange rates change. Balances and settling up always use the Group Settlement Currency.
Can I change a group's settlement currency?
Only before the first expense or repayment is created, and only an Owner or Admin can change it, in Group settings.
Once the first record exists, the currency is locked. Voiding, editing, settling up, or archiving does not unlock it, and past records are not converted again. Create a new group if you need another settlement currency.
What is Simplify debts?
Simplify debts arranges repayments from each person's net balance to reduce the number of payments. For example, if A owes B 300 and B owes C 300, A pays C 300 directly and B stays out of it.
It is a group setting and is on by default. Each person's net balance stays the same; only who pays whom changes, so you may pay someone you do not owe directly. Suggestions may be re-paired after each new expense or repayment.
Go to the group's Payments and tap Simplify debts at the top to see an explanation and a preview. Only an Owner or Admin can turn it on or off; in an archived group it is view-only.
How do I change or delete a record I got wrong?
To change it: open the record in the ledger and tap Edit at the top right. The creator (if still in the group), an Owner, or an Admin can edit it. For a repayment, you can change the amount, date, and note, but not the payer or receiver. Voided records and records in archived groups can't be edited.
To delete it: ZereZ has no delete option, only void. Open the record, tap … at the top right, choose Void expense or Void repayment, select a reason, and confirm. A voided record stays in the ledger marked Voided, but no longer affects balances. Records in archived groups can still be voided.
- Expenses: the creator, an Owner, or an Admin can void them.
- Repayments: the creator, the payer, the receiver, an Owner, or an Admin can void them.
Warning
Voiding can't be undone, and a voided record can't be edited. If you void something by mistake, you can only record it again.
Can I leave a group before settling up?
No. Tap … at the top right of the group screen and choose Group settings. Until you are settled up, Leave group is disabled, and your amount to receive or pay appears below it with a Go to Payments link. A net balance of 0 with payments still pending also counts as not settled up. Once payments are recorded and you are settled up, you can leave.
An Owner can't leave directly. First make a registered member an Admin, then send them an invitation from Ownership Transfer in Group settings. After they accept within 7 days, they become the Owner and you become an Admin, and you can leave once you are settled up.
After leaving, you can still go to Past Groups on the Groups tab, open the group under Former, and view its read-only records under Past group records, but you won't be part of new expenses and can't rejoin at this time.
Invitations and groups
What if an invitation or join link no longer works?
Ask the person who shared the link for a new, valid one. Both kinds expire after 7 days and stop working once revoked or replaced:
- Group join link (the address contains
/join/): ask a group Owner or Admin to create a new link in the app and send it to you. - Personal invitation link (the address contains
/i/, inviting you to claim a member in a group): ask the person who sent you the link for a new one.
How do I invite someone to a group?
- Tap the … (More) button at the top right of the group screen.
- Choose Group invitation link.
- Share the current, valid link.
Any group member can share the current link; only an Owner or Admin can create or replace one. When the other person opens it on their iPhone, the app shows the group details first and lets them decide whether to join.
Account and data
How do I delete my account?
Go to the Account tab, open Account settings, and tap Delete Account at the bottom. Review what happens to each group, verify with Apple or Google, and submit. Your account stops working immediately.
- What is cleared: most of your personal data. Sign-in data is deleted immediately; most other personal data, such as notes, additional void notes, and edit reasons you wrote and photos you uploaded, is cleared within seven days at most. The category chosen when voiding is kept. When a transaction's edit or void records are in an older format or incomplete, notes, older-format void reasons, and edit reasons may remain; subscription and restore records have their own retention periods.
- What is kept: if others can still view a group, its shared ledger (amounts, splits, repayments, and expense titles) stays with them so they can reconcile. Your name is kept by default, and you can choose to remove it when deleting.
Warning
Deleting your account does not cancel your App Store subscription; cancel it separately. For details, see Retention and deletion in the Privacy Policy.
How do I export a ledger?
On the group screen, tap the … (More) button at the top right, choose Export statement, then tap Export CSV to save the group's ledger as a CSV file.
What to include in a report
- App version: find it in the iPhone Settings app under General, iPhone Storage, ZereZ.
- iPhone model and iOS version.
- When it happened, including the time zone.
- Steps to reproduce: what you did right before the problem.
- What you expected and what actually happened.
- Error message: the text or diagnostic code shown on screen.
- Screenshots (optional): we suggest covering unrelated ledger entries, email addresses, names, and other personal details before attaching them.
You can email us even if you don't have every detail. Do not send passwords, verification codes, or complete invitation links.
